New University Technical College offering engineering, science or maths http://aviationonline.info/technical-college-science-maths-engineering-university/ http://aviationonline.info/technical-college-science-maths-engineering-university/#comments Sun, 12 Jan 2014 16:15:03 +0000 http://aviationonline.info/?p=1725 A new University Technical College is offering guaranteed places for Grantham teeangers wanting a career in engineering, science or maths and the chance for local engineering companies to shape their future workforce. University Technical College, in Lincoln, will specialise in engineering with science, mixing core education and technical studies and is equipped with industry-standard facilities as a centre of excellence.

It will open in September. It is non-fee paying and can accommodate between 500 and 800 students.

Speaking at a launch in Grantham, hosted by South Kesteven District Council, college principal Dr Rona Mackenzie outlined plans to offer five per cent of places there to students from Grantham in both Years 10 and 12. “We guarantee every student a successful route into employment, education and training,” she said. “We want to encourage youngsters to get jobs in Lincolnshire and help build the county’s engineering and science base.

“We will be producing the next generation of engineers and scientists and providing a direct link for regional businesses to access the talent coming through the education system.”

Dr Mackenzie urged Grantham employers to get in touch to help shape the skills and knowledge of their future employees. The offer includes shaping curriculum content, work placements, delivering guest lectures, providing advice on training or practical equipment demonstrations and supporting employer-led student projects.

Councillor Frances Cartwright, SKDC portfolio holder for economic development, who has personal experience of running a precision engineering company, said the college was a welcome development.

“What a great opportunity for boys and girls to tap into an education programme which will massively enhance their employment prospects in the world of engineering and science,” she said.

Higher Education in the Middle East with Foreign Universities http://aviationonline.info/higher-education-middle-east-foreign-universities/ http://aviationonline.info/higher-education-middle-east-foreign-universities/#comments Sat, 11 Jan 2014 14:35:44 +0000 http://aviationonline.info/?p=1720 The last few years has seen high interest in higher education with foreign universities in the oil rich Middle East. UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have invested substantially in creating higher education institutions medical colleges and universities from the U.S., Canada and Europe to set up local campuses. These foreign campuses offer Medical studies, International Law studies, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, various Engineering, Medicine Interdisciplinary among the most popular courses.

In the cases of foreign campuses, the assumption is that these institutions will have highest standards of quality and rigor that have enabled them, in their native lands, to become foremost places of learning and inquiry.

In the case of new universities, the goal is to create the crucibles of research studies that will attract top quality academics and students to the region. The global economic downturn, combined with increasing difficulty in attracting research funding in the U.S. and Europe has also benefited these institutions in recruiting quality faculty.

While the jury is still out on the success, largely because success in higher education can never be measured overnight, the experiment is nonetheless bold and the desire to improve higher education worthy of praise and encouragement. The university curriculum and research focus, of most institutions has centered around innovation and technological impact.

First of all, technological innovation does not mean following only the research areas that are popular in the U.S. and other developed countries. Realizing the opportunity to leapfrog in areas that are just coming on the horizon is a sign of visionary leadership. A new frontier at the interface of engineering and medicine in the U.S. and elsewhere is understanding the complexity of global health problems and coming up with unique solutions to address them.

This area of research is often hampered by lack of resources and the institutions in the gulf states have the financial wherewithal to close that funding gap and attract top quality researchers and students. Interest in this area is at an all time high among highly motivated and driven engineering students in the U.S.

It is important to note that one of the key challenges of institutions in the Middle East is attracting top quality students from all over the world. This emphasis on impact, social good, engineering and global health might just do the trick in attracting some of the most gifted students to these institutions.

Second, because of the geographic location of these institutions in the Middle East, they are close to populations in Asia and Africa where high impact global health research is being carried out and needs to be strengthened further. The proximity and the cultural, religious, linguistic and social ties to countries in the neighborhood where global health challenges are pervasive puts these institutions at a huge natural advantage that needs to be capitalized.

High Point University: Disney World Style Campus http://aviationonline.info/high-point-university-disney-world-style-campus/ http://aviationonline.info/high-point-university-disney-world-style-campus/#comments Sat, 11 Jan 2014 11:06:04 +0000 http://aviationonline.info/?p=1715 High-point-University-20140111-01A student relaxes in a hammock on the Disney World-style campus of High Point University in North Carolina which boasts a cinema, a first-class restaurant and an arcade.

Higher education reminds many of gruelling hours in the library, re-heating Pot Noodles and grubby student pubs.
Additional culinary adventures are determined by what can be found in the supermarket’s reduced section rather than by what you fancy for dinner.
However, the students at High Point University are having a rather different experience.

Tough times: When exam pressure gets too tough on High Point students, they can relax by the swimming pool. Or the hot tub. Or in the cinema

The campus, located in High Point, North Carolina, has more resemblance to a theme park than a traditional university, and boasts amenities you are more likely to find at a high-end hotel than at a school.
Aside from the jaw-dropping buildings, a result of more than $700million worth of refurbishing, the campus also has swimming pools, top-end sports facilities and a first-class restaurant where students can enjoy one free five-course meal per week.

The college experience at High Point is worlds away compared to what most university students enjoy during their years in higher education.

The cinema, which shows features straight out of the high-street movie theatres, does not only screen for free, but also offer students complimentary popcorn, sweets and soft drinks.
Should students be so inclined, there is an arcade, a putting green, a sports bar and even an ice cream truck – all of this for no monies.

The campus has been improved with the help of $700million in refurbishments.

High Point’s ‘Greek Village’ – a $19million fraternity and sorority complex, ensures that hard-working students can relax in outdoor hot tubs. However, when that is not enough to combat exam stress, High Point brings in masseuses and puppy therapy.

Not exactly noodles: At the on-campus restaurant 1924 PRIME, High Point students enjoy a five-course meal once a week

It is all thanks to the university’s president, Dr Nido R Qubein, a millionaire entrepreneur who took over the campus eight years ago.
After managing to raise millions to clean up the campus and build new facilities, he now dedicates his life to leading the university.

The campus also has an arcade – but not even the machines in the gaming hall costs the students anything.

In a Biography Channel documentary about his journey, Jordan-born Dr Qubein says: ‘I’m in the business of planting seeds of greatness in the minds and also in the hearts and souls of our students.’
‘All the lessons I have learned in my life, I now bring them to a university campus.’

Students hoping to improve their short game need to look no further than the college’s putting green.

His work has not been for nothing, although tuition and living costs has gone up by 60 per cent, enrolment is up by 50 per cent and the average SAT score of students at High Point is ten per cent higher than eight years ago. Last year Dr Qubein told that he plans improvements costing $2.1billion by 2020, including a new sports arena.
