The trial version of the Researchers Database for workers in accredited universities in the UAE has recently launched by Ministry of Higher Education. According to the Ministry of Higher Education, this database has reached 57 universities in the UAE doing research on applied sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, education, law, information technology, economics, banking, accounting and petroleum studies. The largest higher education institution in the UAE is the Higher Colleges of Technology, which has some 17 campuses across the country. The United Arab Emirates University, based in the city of Al Ain in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, is also growing fast, and is the UAE’s highest ranked in the QS World University Rankings 2011/12. Also featuring in the rankings is the American University of Sharjah (AUS), which is licensed both in the UAE and in the US. AUS offers courses based on the US model of higher education, and is a popular choice with international students, resulting in a very diverse student body. The Director of the Foundation Dr Husam Al Ulama said that the number of researchers involved in the database has reached 5,483 in various scientific disciplines from 57 universities in the UAE. Their research discusses applied sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences, education, law, information technology, Islamic studies, Sharia, economics, banking, accounting and petroleum studies. He also pointed out that researchers that are not registered in the database can participate after completing the process of coordination between the university they belong and the “National Research Foundation”, then completing the form for their participation available at the foundation. The database is intended to encourage cadres capable of conducting specialised scientific research, facilitate the activities of technology transfer, and organise conferences and scientific meetings.
